14 PAX showed up at the Vortex on another high humidity morning. In staying with the military theme from last week’s F3 Chapel Hill’s Hell Week the YHC had big plans for the PAX. As it goes, the plan didn’t come together and an audible was called.
Warm up:
40 X SSH
LBAC x 12 forward and reverse
10 windmills
10 Willis mays hays
10 long slow count merkins
YHC rounded up the PAX and headed for the track at East Chapel Hill HS where the plan was to complete the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT). This test consists of 2 minutes of merkins or to failure, 2 minutes sit-ups or to failure and a 2 mile timed run. However, when we arrived at the track the gates were locked and the fence was at least 8 ft. high. Plan A was aborted and the PAX headed back to Cedar Falls Park and happened to stumble upon 3 big tractor tires on the ECHHS football practice field. It seemed prudent that these tires needed to be moved 100 yds in another direction so the group broke up into 3 teams and rotated through tire flips down the field followed by a jog back to the park.
Keeping with the APFT theme of merkins and running the PAX first circled up for a quick merkin pyramid up to 10 and back down and then performed a declining sprint/merkin ladder starting with a 400 meter run followed by 40 merkins; 2 x 200m runs with 20 merkins after each 200m; and 4 x 100m sprints with 10 merkins after each leg of the run. With time running out on the morning and YHC’s hopes to get to 300 merkins for the workout we all lined up on the sideline for ‘Usain Merkins’. Two PAX called out their merkin of choice (wide grip, hand release, standard, diamond grip, etc) and ran down and back while the remaining PAX did 10 merkins of choice. We rotated through one time a piece and got to a total of 290 merkins. Of course, we finished the last 10 as a team with proper form to reach the 300-merkin goal of the morning.

Great work and a pleasure to lead such a great group!
