20 PAX gathered in the Gloom for the spirited weekly installment of speed work at the Martin Middle School track.  T-claps to Higgins for making his Hi-Fi debut despite much trepidation.  I hope this workout exceeded your expectations and will join us again.

As YHC is is abysmal at leading warm-up, this responsibility was deftly handled by Lamp through two warm-up laps, Good Mornings x 15, King David Kicks x 15, Windmills x 10 and Wall Climbers x 15.

Today’s workout taxed both the body, brain and those without their HP12C calculators. The objective was to accurately predict the time needed to complete a 2×1 Mile relay with a partner, handing off on the quarters. So often we focus on increasing speed and endurance, though accurate pacing shouldn’t be neglected. Excelling at this skill yields great results come race time. After teams were determined, each had 20 seconds to predict their finish time. First wrinkle: while Partner 1 ran a quarter, Partner 2 planked; rinse-repeat. Second wrinkle: no watches.

The first set provided the teams valuable learning as individuals either ran too fast through the reps or were too cautious with predictions. Second sets allowed teams to refine estimates and pacing. If the competition wasn’t enough motivation, some fancy gifts were awarded to the pair who was closest to their second estimate. Results provided below

Delta : Difference between estimate and actual for the aggregated 2 mile race.

Commendable efforts for all groups with marked improvement for estimates across the board. Incredible lessons learned from several pairs who were within 10 seconds of their goal. For their efforts, Team Yo-Yo/Friar Tuck won a granola bar and a fashion forward race tee which will be on display for the next timed mile. Regrettably, the matching shorts were lost during the move.

Other achievements (Greg Folker 9th Place Ribbon Awards):

Greatest improvement: Cornholio/MacGruber – 3:59

Lowest Average Delta: Munson/Geddy – 0:21

Lowest Standard Deviation: Layover/Sunshine – 0:12
