The above question always re-surfaces every time that this workout makes an appearance at Hi Fidelity. One could argue that a Yasso could be a moniker for Denali’s attempted beard growth. #JoeBuckTerritory. Perhaps, it might be the exclamation of the PAX as Post Fontaine and Molasses pass by, “Yah So Fast.” In fact, to much surprise, it is neither of those solutions.

With 9 PAX at the VSF, and 1 Enron already about the work de jour, we set off:

Warm Up:

  • 800 m (2 laps) at fellowship pace
  • 15 windmills, 15 good mornings, 15 imperial walkers

The Thang:

Yasso 800’s are named after a famed editor at Runner’s World magazine. Bart is quite the inspirational character having run marathons all over the world throughout his career. This is a workout that he would do leading up to Marathon season, to determine his readiness. Ideally, you take your goal Marathon finish time. For example we’ll use 3 hours 30 minutes. You then run your 800’s at 3 mins 30 seconds, followed by a 600 recovery also at 3 mins 30 seconds. Ahem…Likewise if you are running a 2 hour 50 minute marathon, your 800’s and 600’s would be done at 2 mins 50 seconds. You roll right into the next 800/600. If you can make 10 repeats at the given time, Bart theorizes that you are ready speed-wise to run the marathon at that given pace. Coincidentally, the 800 pace runs very close to T-pace (1 minute above mile race pace).

Great work by the PAX today. Most got in 7 or 8, with one extra credit aficionado getting the full 10.

  • The Mule is March 4. Sign up somewhere. Possibly the twitter-verse.
  • There is this Ruck thing happening. Sign up is now full. Get on the waiting list.
  • Sunshine ran his Yasso’s in parking lot in Dallas Texas. Nice work. Glad that he didn’t get arrested. #marathonHermanos

That is All. Enron leads that festivities next week.
