Today was supposed to be a grand event at Hi Fidelity: “Packs for the Pax” – all the fun of The Triple’s burritos combined with zaniness of the Forge Awards.  The plan was to have a good running workout with gimmicks galore (hey, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em), but a monsoon and track flooding got in the way.  Regardless, strong work today by Sunshine, Layover, and CK, who gave it 100% in some awful running conditions.  Also, strong work by the PAX who stayed home today.  Outstanding judgment!

At the start, the PAX were informed that there would be PRIZES (how fun!) for strong showings today.  YHC wouldn’t be afraid to give all the awards to himself though if he earned them.

Four warm-up laps, some Good Mornings and King David Leg Kicks, and we were off.

The Thang:

A roll of the die determined our distances (oooooo!!!), run at R-pace:

  • 1: 200m
  • 2: 400m
  • 3: 600m
  • 4: 800m
  • 5: 1000m
  • 6: 1 mile

Following each run we ran one recovery lap and then rolled again.  Layover started things off by rolling a 6.  Everybody got a roll.

Conditions were bad, and then they got worse: heavy rain, hail, strong wind gusts (75 mph???), lightning….YHC’s nightmare (probably have pneumonia now as a result).  Given the dangerous conditions, we prudently called the workout early.  Three cheers for us.

We ran up to the school for a quick awards ceremony.  Drum roll please…

  • The Upper Deck Award (for best effort): Layover
  • The Ultra Award (for the guy we most want on our BRR team): CK
  • The Topps Award (for the top performer of the day): Sunshine

The prizes were unopened packs of baseball cards that YHC picked up at a baseball card show at the Fairgrounds (yes, apparently these things still happen) over the weekend: Layover took home two packs of ’91 Upper Deck; CK got two packs of ’92 Fleer Ultra; and Sunshine got two packs of ’91 Topps Stadium Club.  The awards ceremony was quite lame.  We’ll blame that on the weather.
