17 pulled into Green Elementary School where most in attendance exchanged the customary niceties (nice to see a couple of new faces but a few GF regulars noticeably absent…you know who you are). Fudd also made the observation of some sort of lip condition Mr Rogers obtained while in Key West recently. I’m pretty sure I misheard it. No FNGs so we went straight to work.

Joule “volunteered” for Q next week

You just never know when something will completely alter life’s trajectory. I’ve often mentioned that I will select my Q days on dates that have somewhat of a significance for me–sometimes big, sometimes not. I’ve found that it’s a good way to celebrate or mourn in a nutty running-around-parking-lots-and-city-parks-at-5:30-in-the-morning kind of way. So, as was regaled during our closing plank-to-fail contest, March 23 twenty years ago fell on Palm Sunday. In 1997 I was 32 and on a (perceived) lengthy losing streak in a number of ways and my days were usually filled with sorrow/regret. I was growing pretty tired of the near-constant kicks to the crotch to me and the people I cared about. Upon leaving church that day, I headed to my ’92 Thunderbird in the nether regions of the St. Raphael parking lot, I happened upon lady, approximately within my age cohort, whom I had never seen before (but was supposedly pretty regular at Raphael’s). She had the hood of her ’88 Olds Cutlass Ciera up and asked if I had any jumper cables. Later I found out that I was the third one to pass that day but the first to have cables in my car. After affirming that I did, in fact, have some cables (that may or may not have been previously given to me by my mother), I retrieved my car and drove over alongside her car. Let me tell you, The Captain was NOT a smooth operator. Enamored and/or flustered, I failed to put car in PARK before getting out. Hilarity ensued (although she has since admitted that she thought that I was an idiot). If that wasn’t enough, I completed the stalker profile by following her to the Western Auto “to make sure she got there safely.” But it eventually turned out OK (engaged ~5 months later and married a year after that and have a 14 yo son). So life’s funny/weird/awesome sometimes. It kind of reinforces the notion to never give up on yourself or life even if you feel as though you’ve done more wrong than right. You just never know when one thing will be the catalyst for things take a turn for the better … like jumping a girl in the church parking lot
