I never promised you a rose garden, but I did promise you a thigh burner. And that is what those of you who came out (12 PAX including an FNG) into the gloom of Apex got. Gloomy it was – dark, cold, wet, and foggy. Stephen King could not have drawn up a gloomier day. You look up gloom in the dictionary….ok, you get it. But the constant mumble chatter cut through the gloom.

Our weekly doobie-smoking, purple-hazed pothead had not yet arrived to open the gates and burn his morning fatty, so we dutifully parked on the street and ran into the park from there after, of course, a healthy disclaimer for the FNG

Here’s what we did:

Run to the first parking lot on the left and circle up.

Warm-Up:

The Thang:
Partner up. Size will matter.
P1 takes off sprinting for 1st island to do 10 merkins while P2 does 10 merkins. P2 sprints to 1st island,tags partner and drops for 10 more merkins while P1 sprints for the next island…and so on all the way around the parking lot – 6 stops and 60 merkins total. Repeat except with sumo squats. Recover on the jog down to the next parking lot.

4 Corners (this Wolfpacker’s only nod to Dean Smith because….enough already with the deification of St. Dean. Too soon?)
Start from the middle and run to each corner then back to the middle. At each of 4 corners, you and your partner will do 20 reps of a designated jump exercise then back to the middle for 5 merkins.
Corner 1: 20 Star Jumps x 20
Corner 2: Sumo Squat Jumps x 20
Corner 3: Tuck Jumps x 20
Corner 4: One-Legged Squat Jumps x 10 each leg
4 sets of 5 merkins in the middle for a total of 20

Thighs started to burn at this point. Recover on the jog down along the trail next to the power lines to the bottom of the hill. Here’s where size matters. P1 hops on the back of P2 for a partner carry up the hill. It’s a looong hill. And this 173 lb YHC didn’t do a good job with the sizing, carrying a 205 lb partner. Both partners do 10 squats, job back down the hill and flip flop for another run up the hill, more squats, and a jog back down. Thighs are REALLY burning at this point. Recover on the jog along the trail over to the shelter for some Mary and a little more arm work.

We’re at the far end of the park now and have to jog back to the gate where our cars are. YHC has worn himself out and pretends to care about the guys at the back and drops back to make sure no one gets left behind. Yeah, that’s the ticket…dropped back on purpose.
