Just over 25 years ago, I was a sophomore scooping Swensen’s Ice Cream back in ’88 when what has often been voted as the best moment in baseball history ever occurred.  Kirk Gibson, the Dodger’s star, hobbled by injuries…could barely walk.  The best reliever in baseball (pre-Mariano Rivera), Dennis Eckersley was on the mound to close out Game 1 of the World Series for the Oakland A’s up 4-3 on the Dodgers.  Enter pinch hitter Kirk Gibson.  He worked it to a 3-2 count, 2 outs and the rest is well…history – cue The Natural theme song…lights exploding…awesomeness in the air, fist pump going around 2nd…. https://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/big-league-stew/kirk-gibson-famous-home-run-turns-25-10-182312446–mlb.html Well this AM wasn’t quite like that, but YHC has definitely been hobbled by some injuries of late and got the call to step up…9 PAX planted the VSF this AM for another edition of The Crucible… Now that I think about it, 9 was Roy Hobbs number…I trust the PAX got their money’s worth…

WARMUP:  Run in place, butt kickers, wide knees, SSH x20, Jog to the far corner of Williams Park at the intersection of Lynn and Lead Mine.  Plank hold for rest of the PAX to arrive.

  • Mountain Climbers x20
  • Plank Hold w/ right arm behind back; same w/ left arm
  • Merkins (or is it Mericans?) x 20
  • Jog to tennis courts


  • All PAX on the line – suicides across 2 courts – plank hold at the end while waiting for all to finish – 10 Merkins (4 count cadence) – Sprint back to the other end of the court – People’s Chair 45 seconds
  • Repeato w/ 10 Wide Grip Merkins (4 count cadence) – Sprint back to the other end of the court – Balls to the Wall – 45 seconds
  • Repeato w/ 15 Reverse LBC’s – Sprint back to the other end of the court – People’s Chair 45 seconds
  • Lunge Walk across both tennis courts
  • Broad Jump + Star Jumps w/ increasing # of Star Jumps (ex: broad jump + 1 star jump, Broad jump + 2 Star Jumps, etc.)

NOTE:  YHC called an audible mid-court (wasted) had PAX bear crawl the rest of the way.  Jog to covered porch area with the picnic tables.

  •  Half the PAX got in plank on top of a picnic table – Merkins (AMRAP)
  • Half the PAX did 20 jump ups OYO and then we flapjacked
  • YHC checked his watch – plenty of time left
  • Jog to the mini-track


  • Imperial Walker x 20
  • Seal Jacks x20
  • Run a lap around the track
  • Power Knees x 15 (Left knee then Right knee)
  • Ski Abs x 20
  • Run a lap around the track
  • Squats until PAX arrives, Mosey over to…


  • Bear Crawl up – 5 Burpees at the top – Jog back down
  • Gorilla Up – 4 Burpees at the top – Jog back down
  • Sprint Up – 3 Burpees at the top – Jog back down
  • Bear Crawl Up – 2 Burpees at the top – Jog back down
  • Gorilla Up – 5 burpees at the top – Recover on the jog back to the parking lot
