Good times again at the Vortex this morning, as 13 PAX returned to form after a long weekend.  It was good to see some regulars as well as others hitting the Tuesday morning slot for the first time.

A slight deviation from THC’s normal warmup today, with a quick lap followed by 16 cadence-count SSHs, windmills, Willie Mays Hayes, and close-grip merkins.  Word on the street (well, on my wife’s Piyo video) is that doing tricep merkins first is good for the shoulder, reducing the chance of injury…  Then to the playground.

In pairs, PAX each did two sets of max pull-ups, taking turns while rotating through leg exercises with a lite cardiac component (high knees, butt kickers, up-backs, scissor kicks, squats, box jumps, SSHs, jump lunges, etc.).  Then back to the field.

The main event consisted of two relays (5 pairs and one group of 3), the first focusing on the upper body (clean-and-jerk equivalent with sandbags, merkins, and sprints) and the second on the lower body (squats with sandbags, jump lunges, and sprints).  We performed each relay for eight minutes.  Holly Farms play-of-the-game was Kitten sprinting all-out on his last rep.  Will tape cinder blocks for next time, which will be a bit more durable.

With Bushwood in mind, who seemed disappointed last time not to have more animal crawls, we finished with a few (short) animal sprints: bear crawl/crawl bear (brilliant, Walt!); panther crawl (again owned by Brick)/crab walk; and more bear crawl/crawl bear.  Despite Kim Jung Still’s prophecy, no vomit, which was mildly disappointing. Finished with six minutes of Mary.  Very impressive work from everyone!

I wish the workouts lasted an hour; we left lots of fun on the table this morning.  Dunphy pointed out that it is now light enough for the rather technical nature trail (but at a cost of ten minutes, is it worth it?!), and we didn’t have a multiple of three or four that would have made my favorite relay possible.  Can’t wait till next time!
