After an inexcusable length of time without a Q under my belt, YHC took the helm at Chavis and took 22 PAX through the “Greatest Hits” of Ambassador.
The Thang:
Run to the circle below the carousel for warmup, including the usual suspects (SSH, MC, GM, IW, SM) and a tribute to Ambassador regulars with the Sir Fazio Arm Circles and Yoda’s Chilcutt Springups. 5 Burpees OYO, then partner up for the day (1’s and 2’s) for the tour.
Jog back to the parking lot to pick up the HT men (Thanks OD) and then down to the bottom lot for partner work with partner 1 sprinting to the oak and then running backwards to the start while partner 2 did standard merkins, then flap jack and repeato with sumo squats and LBCs.
Mosey around the back of the park, with an accidental tourist moment through one of the housing areas and over to the front of Ligon. on the wall for Irkins, Dips and Derkins
Saunter to the rockpile. Partner 1 does curls, while partner 2 runs up the steps and down the ramp, flap jack, and repeato with shoulder presses and tricep extensions.
Meander to Yoda’s hill for a short visit. Bear crawl up, 5 squats, run down, squat hold. Run up, 5 burpees, run down, squat hold, sprint to the top, then exit stage right.
Fellowship run back to the football field at Chavis, with a stop for some LBCs at the top of the stairs.
Lineup across from partner at opposite ends of field. Partner 1 sprints toward partner 2 while partner 2 does standard merkins, flap jack.
What happened next was the ugliest game of Ultimate in the history of Ultimate. 11 on 11 may have been a bit much in a confined space, especially without any color coordination or advance knowledge of who would be on what team. One score occurred, and there were many penalty merkins and burpees, including 5 halftime burpees OYO. The lowlight was when Overdraft went in search of a floating Frisbee and (we think) accidentally collided with a 2.0 in search of same Frisbee. No blood, no foul…and a bunch of mumblechatter about picking and size, etc.
Trot back to the baseball field lot for PAX called Mary exercises, including Freddie Mercury, Low Slow Flutter, Homer to Marge, Monkey Humpers, Boat/Canoe (complete with paddling and rowing) LBCs and a 5 count six inch leg hold.
The Skin:
Chavis and the surrounding community is an incredible place, and every Saturday we get an opportunity to interact with members of the community here.
One cannot be in this area on this weekend and not reflect on the work and life of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. YHC reflected on his childhood in the middle of desegregation in Northern VA. As an 8 year old boy, I befriended Harold Haskins, and never saw him as anything other than a friend and brother…never once did I think about being any different, although clearly we were. Encouraged the PAX to look past differences and engage others as equals…and to respect others.
Yoda took us out with a strong prayer about diversity and loving each other.
Injuries, travel and laziness kept YHC from leading a workout over the past few years, and it felt really good to have the opportunity to lead again. It was indeed a pleasure to do so.
