YHC pulled out of his neighborhood recognizing the white Honda Accord that just drove past…who else would be out at this time…alas, it was Yo Yo, surely on his way to my AO today, right?  Not to be as Yo Yo streaked on past Shelley Lake.  YHC turned left into an empty parking lot about 520am with memories of some cold January posts from years past.  A Twitter post had been sent out Monday night calling the PAX to brave the elements and as a Q, you never know who may show up.  With 5 min to spare, a few tested and seasoned PAX started making their way in.  YHC pulls up his phone and sees a quick news alert – FLASH – Twitter is down worldwide!  Panic!  The Madness!  So I immediately switch to a devotional to see what encouraging words can ignite the flame today… the topic?  “You First”  and I glanced around and checked the mercury..sitting at 19, who was going to be first to step out…that honor went to Ron Mexico.  Time to get to it men…this is after all, True Grit.  Who cares if Twitter is down…we got work to do.

7 PAX circled up and with no FNG’s a quick warmup ensued.

  • SSH x 25
  • Imperial Walkers x 25
  • High Knees x 25

Follow me jog out of the parking lot, down the wooden stairs across the short bridge by the bottom of Dam Hill, up the hill to the open field.  Quick stop.  YHC explained we’d work our way around the lake with various pain stations along the way, each with a minimum of 25 reps per exercise OYO with a Squat Hold at the end until all PAX were done.  After each exercise we resumed the run around the lake until the next stop.  Here are the different pain stations I can recall

  • 25 Merkins
  • 25 Reverse LBC’s
  • 25 Prisoner Squats
  • 25 Alternating Lunges
  • Brief stop at the back of the lake for some rock work
    • 25 Rock Curls
    • 25 Tricep Extensions
    • 25 Rut Rows
    • 25 Burpees
    • 25 LBC’s
  • Continue running.  Next stop, partner up
    • Ball Sweat?  (P1 lies on their back holding P2’s ankles while bringing their legs up.  P2 pushes P1’s legs left, right, straight down – Flapjack after 25)
  • Continue running
  • 25 Wide Grip Merkins
  • Lunge Walk at next stop for about 40-50 yards
  • At the wall near the long bridge..
    • Peoples Chair (10 count down the line)
    • Balls to the Wall (10 count down the line)
  • Bear Crawl halfway across the bridge
  • Gorilla across the other half  (now I remember why I hate Gorilla)
  • 25 American Hammers
  • Run to boathouse
    • 25 Merkins and 25 LBC’s
  • Jog to bottom of the steep hill on the path
  • Backwards Bear Crawl up the hill #crowdpleaser this really added an extra layer of suck
  • Jog to the parking lot for Mary
    • 25 Crunchy Frog
    • 15 Freddy Mercury

DONE – COT

Moleskin

  • Good crowd of solid PAX vets.  True Grit is a great place to Q
  • Cold AM meant the Snotwoggle started early, like before we finished our first merkin set
  • Before our second stop, a lone jogger appeared in the gloom wearing no headgear and shorts. #Bold
  • Mumblechatter a plenty on the backwards bear crawl.

YHC briefly shared some words from the “You First” devotional from Our Daily Bread – 19 Jan 2016 – courtesy of odb.org

Tibetan-born Sherpa Nawang Gombu and American Jim Whittaker reached the top of Mount Everest on May 1, 1963. As they approached the peak, each considered the honor of being the first of the two to step to the summit. Whittaker motioned for Gombu to move ahead, but Gombu declined with a smile, saying, “You first, Big Jim!” Finally, they decided to step to the summit at the same time.

Paul encouraged the Philippian believers to demonstrate this kind of humility. He said, “Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others” (Phil. 2:4 nkjv). Selfishness and superiority can divide people, but humility unites us, since it is the quality of “being one in spirit and of one mind” (v. 2).

When quarrels and disagreements occur, we can often diffuse them by giving up our right to be right. Humility calls us to show grace and gentleness when we would rather insist on our own way. “In humility value others above yourselves” (v. 3).

Practicing humility helps us to become more like Jesus who, for our sake, “humbled himself by becoming obedient to death” (vv. 7-8). Following in Jesus’ footsteps means backing away from what is best for us and doing what is best for others.
