12 PAX showed up for opening day at Thomas Brooks Park / USA Baseball complex where Ma Bell was waiting on deck for a baseball themed workout. Field of Dreams quickly turned into Field of Nightmares! Here’s how it went down:
- The Warm-up
After a quick jog uphill past the baseball fields to the upper parking lot, we circled up for some blood-circulating exercises. Everything from here-on out would be in multiples of 3 or 9 – baseball style

- The Thang
Jog over to the upper soccer field which, for the fact that it was frozen solid in the 25 degree weather, would have been a swamp after the weekly Monday rain. We gathered at the goal at one end of the field. The other goal was for some reason positioned about 30 yards downfield, the perfect distance for what was about to come.
1st Inning: Bear Crawl Goal to Goal. Do 9 diamond merkins
Run back to first goal and celebrate with 9 burpees. Plank until everyone is done.
2nd Inning: Lunge walk goal to goal. Do 9 diamond merkins
Run back and do 9 burpees. Plank until everyone is done.
[It was at this point that Ce-Lo tapped me on the shoulder and said he “wasn’t feeling good” mumbling something in Alabamese about he shouldnt-a-et that chicken fried steak with peppers at 9:00 the night before]
3rd Inning: Duck walk goal to goal. Do 9 diamond merkins
Run back and do 9 burpees
Ran back downhill and made a stop in the bullpen, which was cleverly disguised as a picnic shelter with picnic tables and everything.
4th inning: Alternating Left-Right Step-ups x 21
Dips x 15
5th inning: ALR Step-ups x 18
Dips x 12
6th inning: ALR Step-ups x 15
Dips x 9
7th inning: ALR Step-ups x 12
Dips x 6
Mosey over to the basketball court for the final innings. There would be no relief pitcher. Ma Bell was going the distance, and decided it was time for some murder suicides: end-line to first set of goals and back, end line to 2nd set of goals and back, end line to far end line and back
8th inning: 9 regular merkins at each stopping/turning point. If you’re doing your math, that’s 54 merkins right there. People’s chair for a 9 count down the line.
9th inning: 9 wide grip merkins at each stopping/turning point. People’s chair for a 9 count down the line.
10th inning: Uh-oh, extra innings. 10 diamond merkins at each stopping/turning point. Squat hold for a 9 count down the line. Hands in the air (like you just don’t care)
With arms a danglin’, we circled up for some Mary:
LBCs x 9. Hold up for 9 count. Repeato. Repeato.
Box cutters x 9. Between each box, 6″ leg hold for 9 count.
